Reverie

My shadow points north
where velveteen moss hangs
from gnarled oak--longing
for osage and dogwood
my father beside me
on a bale of hay, smoking
in the cool barn, now
where only swallows nest—
the rails no longer humming

high desert rush

blood flows faster
driving into Vegas
marquee buzz
highway country

recognized an Angel
sitting on the curb
displaced   Chi
soul   life force

alternate version   trapped
in a parallel universe
separated by a veil
dividing   into infinite selves

high desert  gateway
to the multiverse

The Birthday

Memories trespass
into her thoughts
with the unexpected word
the intrusive image…

CNN reporting live from Baghdad
where there is a sense of liberation
the first wave of bombings
absolutely stunning to see.

            …taking her back to D-day 1944
            her 24th birthday
            the beaches of Normandy
            stained red with the blood
of boys she grew up with.

On the television screen
an ancient city disintegrates
into an expanding mushroom cloud
against a ghostly-green night-scope sky.

            Of course, collateral damage
            is to be expected
            when liberating people.

A lone birthday card lies before her, unopened.
